Eeesh the service here is terrible. I had called for delivery and I live within 5 minutes, but the woman kept me on the phone for a while as I was telling her my address and she just told me I'm not in their range and hung up. I ended up picking up my food there and barely a word was uttered to me, it was very awkward. The food was decent, I had ordered the sushi which was fine, their noodles are a little greasy but for the price it's what you'd expect.

Excellent and fresh food! We love this place, the food is delicious and very fresh!

I came here with a friend who didn't like sushi, but likes chinese food. This place was perfect for us because I was really in the mood for sushi, and it's right down the road from me. On the outside, this place looks dingy, but inside it's actually clean and nicely decorated. The service we received was fast and friendly, and we got quite a lot of food for not much money at all. The entrees were reasonably priced, and the appetizers and desserts were very cheap ($3 edamame and $3 banana tempura). Also, they give you a decent sized bowl of wonton crackers and dipping sauces to munch on. The sushi was good too; not the best I've ever had, but good quality, unique rolls with fresh ingredients. Considering this place is right down the road from me, I'll certainly be returning. P.S.- their lunch menu looked like a great value, and same goes for their cocktail menu!

This past Sunday I went here for a christening. Food was good, but the service sucks. My Uncle paid a lot of money for this party and it was so expensive for no service and no English. They didn't know how to make drinks. I waited for my drink about 20 minutes. It looked like the waitress was the bartender and the cook??? Not worth the money for a party. It's funny I went to my aunts 50th birthday party a year ago here and the experience was much different. Maybe under new management, but they won't be lasting long if they keep this up.

A friend who lives in this area introduced me to golden star and I'm glad he did. I found this place to actually be one of the better Asian fusion restaurants that I have eaten at. They have a decent sized menu, where you will find all the regular dishes. And a huge sushi menu as well. Service was fast and friendly in regards to both eating in and take out. They have a sushi bar in the back, next to a big flat screen TV. Whats better than enjoying a diamond roll and watching the game.

This is my usual takeout for chinese food. Food is good/average but its the best Chinese in this area that im aware of. Other local Chinese places make me feel very uneasy about cleanliness and quality. Ive never dined inside but looks fine. I always order the standards, chicken and brocolli, general Chao's, lo mein..... Its just something to eat, not bad. In all fairness, I should try dining in sometime, wouldnt be the first time that dining in was better than take out for the same restaurant.

The only reason I am giving this place more than 1 star is because of the fast delivery. The parts of the food that had some taste were sub-par, while other parts of it actually tasted rotten. Left a really bad taste in my mouth. My friends and I haven't gotten sick yet, but I guess its a waiting game now. Quick delivery though!

Fast delivery. I never ordered sushi for delivery but I will definitely order from here again. Great food !

The food is great, they could work on the staff! The sushi is very good, and the delivery isn't to long!

Haven't been here to sit, only takeout. Walking in is beautiful. Drinks and snack came quick. Very friendly service so far. Entrees came and food was delicious. Will absolutely be coming back. Polite, courteous and most of all CLEAN.

Great good. Fresh tasting sushi. Lots of options. I deducted two stars bc they are highly overpriced, their sushi roll menu is mostly eithier lobster rolls which are naturally expensive, or Kani rolls that are waaaaay overpriced.

Don't be deceived, this place has it all! They have all types of cuisines, a full service sushi bar with amazing fresh sushi, and a full bar in the back. Their menu is the most extensive I've seen and they have taught me about dishes I didn't even know I'd love. Dining room is authentic and makes you feel in the presence of the cultural cuisines they serve. Order out, dine-in, or make new friends watching the game or race on their flat screens at the bar. The owner is modest and talented while taking pride in his cuisines and the staff are super friendly.

Deceptively good place. It is surprisingly nice inside if you want to sit down there, and we used to get them regularly for takeout when we lived in the area. We like them enough to still stop there when we are in the area. Good Chinese food, good sushi, good all around. I see reviews saying poor things about the service for dine in, but we didn't encounter those issues ourselves.

By far one of the better chines resturants in the area. Been going since they opened. They have changed a little but food never really disappoints. Have never found anything in their food as far as bugs go. Can't say that for many of the Chinese take outs in the area. Sushi may not be the best, but I don't go there for that. Good over all resturant people need to get over them selves.

Poor service: took 20 minutes to take our order, ordered 2 deserts and only one came, when the food came out, waitress asked us to clear the table for her its unbelievable. Poor cleanliness: the napkins were folded nice and neat with fork and knife tucked inside but the napkins were noticeably soiled by brown substance. Spoons came out later during deserts and were rusty and not carefully washed, left streaks and smears. There was broken brown plastic pieces in our ice cream!!! gross, i could've swallowed it and gotten sick! Poor customer satisfaction: after i told her about our poor experience, she asked why i didn't leave any tip. Food quality: sushi was average nothing exceptional. Raw red snapper is very chewy for some reason. The salad is horrific. Its a watery mess with uncut leaf of lettuce. SAVE YOURSELF DONT COME HERE, NEVER AGAIN WILL I COME BACK HERE.

Pretty terrible. Food is just okay, and the service sucks. The hostess/front counter girl is so snotty and rude. The sashimi/sushi isn't ever fresh but when it comes to maki you can tell they use the fish left over from days earlier. Their fried food is always soggy. Everything just kind of blows. Don't waste your time here. If you want to pay this price, take your business to Sumou or Hoshi or anywhere else. So not worth it.

This place has a huge vegetarian menu and the food is delicious. By vegetarian not just stir fried vegetables, they have all sorts of mock meats and seafood, daily lunch specials with large portions and soup average like $6.

Surprisingly nice sit down Chinese restaurant. I assume it was a sports bar before as I never saw a Chinese Restaurant with so many TV's! Sushi bar and a full bar and plenty of seats. I went for take-out. Food was good, typical Chinese take-out (lo main, sesame chicken, lemon chicken, moo shu pork). I would have given another star if it was cheaper or if food was much better. Other issue was parking was horrible - it is on main road and you have to park in the back which does not have sufficient parking. It was a real hassle for just running in to get take out.

This place is so bad I even had to return the iceberg lettuce salad. They serve watered down miso soup with metal spoons. It's an embarrassment for either Chinese or japanese food

I took my daughter and 2 of her friends here for her birthday. It was the first time we sat down in the restaurant ( I have ordered take out here before). We were greeted quickly by a waitress and she got our drinks to us quickly(plus refills) The food was very good, as it always is in this place. We had plenty of leftovers to take home as well. I will say that the restaurant prices are a bit higher than the take out prices, for the same food. Overall, this was a nice place to eat.

ladies at the front were not very friendly. ordered take out, sat at the bar for a beer while I waited for my food, bartender was friendly but bar clientel was tough to listen to, truckers language including a guy yelling "Suck my ...rhymes with clock!" didn't even finish my beer! got back to hotel, no chop skicks, no utinsils! no napkins... food was okay, would not go back!

The reason I gave it a three star review is because of the staff. The food is top quality and amazing. The staff however seems sad, weak, and unreadable.

The pineapple hibachi rice is everything. As my son stated, give this place five starts it's AMAZING. He's a big fan of the sushi.

My boyfriend and I were heading back from the vineyards and decided to have sushi for dinner. That being said we choose sushi for dinner 19 out of 20 times when going out. We decided to try a new sushi restaurant and the Golden Star was near by on google maps. I was a bit skeptical trying a new restaurant and it turns out for the right reason. I was torn between giving a generous 3 stars, but settled for 2 stars and feel comfortable with this decision now. We walked in on a Saturday at rush hour and we got a table without waiting. The restaurant resembles a asian decorated diner/sports bar. The decor appeared old and cheap. 5 tv monitors were attached all around the dining room broadcasting some sports game killing the dining atmosphere. Our waiter was nice, quiet, and forgetful. But after asking 3 times, we finally got the water we asked for. We ordered the seafood egg foo soup which was the best item we ordered this evening. For the main course we ordered the sashimi deluxe, the red snapper/cucumber roll and the two thumbs up roll. The fish overall was fresh and the display was excellent for the sashimi and ok for the rolls. The specialty roll was supposed to have crab in it, the menu did not indicate that it was imitation crab. So we were disappointed to find out that the main part of the roll consisted of fake crab mixed with mayo. The spicy tuna topping had a strong mayo flavor as well. To end on a good note, I love the fact that the waiter brought over a full pot of hot green tea as I tend to drink a lot of it.

In a vegetarian family, finding good Chinese food (particularly with mock meat) is a challenge. So, I was excited to try Golden Star, and bring home a selection of foods for dinner. That excitement ended with the first taste. The veg wanton soup was bland to the point of being tasteless; the wantons were nothing more than dough folded into dough (with no spinach, which is commonly used to stuff them). The veg calamari was rubbery and disgusting. The veg roast pork fried rice had genuine pork, and was thrown away, untasted. The veg sesame shrimp was unpleasant. Even the fried noddles (for the soup) were bitter and nasty-tasting. My daughter commented that it's almost impossible to ruin white rice, but somehow they managed. Too bad there's no ZERO STAR rating available for Golden Star.

Not life altering or anything, but pretty decent food! We've only dined-in there twice, but order take out fairly often... 2-3 times a month. I am a vegetarian and have always ordered vegetarian "chicken" dishes, spring rolls, and the wonton soup. When I stopped eating meat I thought I would never have wonton soup again, so I'm thrilled to have been able to find a decent replacement. My husband eats meat, and has ordered every variety of food on the menu (Chinese and sushi) and he and the rest of the family have enjoyed it every time. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for vegetarian Chinese food, or just good Chinese take out!

Everything about this place is average and slightly expensive. Food used to be better than it is now. If you have no other options, this place is good. Otherwise, it's tolerable if you have a sushi crave and don't want to go far for it.

I came here for Chinese food but I really want to try the Sushi. There's an award winning Sushi Chef (or team, not 100% sure.) I got take out. This place has a really fun interior. It seems great for big groups. They are having some crazy drink specials this month. due to the take out factor I neglected to check the beer menu, etc. The food preparation and taste was OK. However, After the Shrimp egg Foo Young, and the Beef w? garlic sauce. Wifey and I both felt queezy throughout the night. Me thinks its the oil. It's worth mentioning the Beef W/ Garlic sauce combo lacked beef. The Rice was reminiscent to Rice O' Roni. I wanna like this place I'm giving Golden Star a second chance in the near future. I usually avoid the Chinese combo *ie Chinese / Thai -or- Chinese / Sushi places but Spidey sense is tingling on their Sushi. Not a destination spot (yet.)

After Green Melody in Jericho closed, we thought we'd never eat Chinese on Long Island again. They have a full vegetarian selection- mock pork, chicken, beef, and even seafood. (But ask special for the vegetarian menu.) The sauces can be overly sweet, but we'll definitely be back. The service was attentive and the lunch deal was great. ($5.50 for sesame "chicken", fried rice, hot tea, and soup)

Four stars because I am the most critical person you will ever come across when it comes to Chinese. While I love the flavor of Chinese food, I don't trust any of those places to be clean. I'm tired of ordering sesame or orange chicken from someone's favorite local place and biting into fatty nasty stuff that's supposed to be chicken inside. There's a reason why people for years joke about chinese places using cat, in fact I'm convinced if some places used cat their quality of meat would be better than some of the alternates they try and pass off now. Why the rant of other places? It's to make the point that I finally found a place to get pretty good Chinese food with REAL meat and REAL chicken inside items such as orange and sesame chicken. Its not the best Chinese you've ever had but it's consistently pretty good and much cleaner with a higher quality than most places you'll find. After giving up on Chinese, I can eat takeout again thanks to Golden star. The Japanese is more their restaurant type of food which I get as takeout often as well. The shrimp tempura is very good, so is the shrimp tempura sushi roll. Actually all of their Sushi is very good. Again its not the best you've ever had, but it's very good and always fresh with a massive variety down to even a Giants and Jets roll. It's a clean decorative environment with friendly service.

My sister really likes this place although I think it's okay. The servings are huge for the price. I split chicken pad thai ($10) and ended up with leftovers; it's enough to feed three. My sister really enjoyed her cantonese style fried noodles so overall, good for the price but not great.

I have been coming to Golden Star for a many years now. I actually used to dine in here nearly once a week at times! I have since cut back on my visits drastically, but I have tasted a wide array of their food they have to offer. First of all, the place is large and has plenty of seating, if you are looking to a nice quite time to come in and eat you cant go wrong between the times of 2:00-3:00pm, you will also catch the lunch special if you so desire. The sushi is always fresh and I cant remember ever being disappointed with it. This is mainly what I order when I come here, but I am the kind of person who prefers specialty rolls rather than your run-of-the-mill single ingredient rolls. One of my personal favorites is the Tsunami roll, fans of deep fried rolls will love this thing as it is served crispy and warm with a nice wasabi special sauce (but it is not that spicy). generally their special rolls are on the pricey side, $12+ each but that's to expect if you want some quality sushi. The menu of special rolls is staggering, and on your first visit it will seem overwhelming to look through because there is so much to choose from. just go with whatever looks good, chances are you will be coming back to try more in the future. Their portions here for food, other than sushi, are beyond generous, so much so that when you come for lunch, it seems a bit too good to be true. I have ordered Japanese, Chinese and even fusion plates and all of them have jumbo portion sizes whether you eat in or take out. Their teriyaki chicken is delicious, don't miss it. Their waiting staff has recently changed over the past few months and they seem to have lost some of their more friendly staff members, but overall they are always pleasant, especially the owner Kevin. Be sure to visit their website as they usually always have some coupons to use. The savings are minor, but it helps.

You just can't mix a Chinese and Japanese restaurant into one place...I am holding back on this one, so bare with me. This is a Chinese restaurant where seemingly one sushi chef is hired to provide sushi behind the tiny little sushi bar hidden in the back. The rolls are generic overall, nothing to rave about. Don't come here if you are looking for quality sushi....for that, go to Kotobuki and wait with the cattle, the food is worth it. Here, I thought the cooked food was pretty terrible....the chicken teriyaki made me nauseous, the noodle dishes were nothing good. The service was forgetful, unenthusiastic, and flighty. I would not recommend this place to any of my friends or family. On a positive note, at least they dumped tons of money into renovating the old building to make it presentable again. Thumbs down, unfortunately.

From the outside, this restaurant is seemingly dingy. When you walk in, you'll find that it's actually nicely decorated with a large dining area and many tables and booths. They have a vast menu that covers everything from standard take-out Chinese food, to entrees like Cantonese-style lobster, to pad thai, to various sushi rolls. The drink menu is vast as well... but seeing how I came here for lunch and had to return to work afterwards, I controlled myself (barely). I ordered the "Roll Combo" Sushi Lunch Special -- $7.95 for any 2 maki rolls and soup or salad. I had the Alaskan Roll and the Mango & Shrimp Roll. The lunch partner had the Philly Roll and the Crunchy Spicy Salmon Roll. Everything was good, no complaints! Extra points because I ordered a cup of green tea, and they brought out a whole teapot for me! and it was FREE! The wait staff barely speaks English, but they were friendly nonetheless. I will be back for sure!

Holy horrendous service, batman! You order things and they bring out something different and when you tell them thats not what you ordered they then tell you it is what you ordered and you can certainly tell its not. Happened TWICE in one night. Heres how it all went down: Server: Vegetarian orange chicken? Me: No, I ordered the orange beef, not chicken... Server: No, you say chicken Me: No i most definitely said beef Server: Ok, its vegetarian beef :::puts down the plate and walks away::: Me: What the fuck just happened? Then later in the evening we order dessert.....this thing called a brownie bash. She comes out with the Tiramisu. These two things look NOTHING like each other. So we call her out on this. "Oh no, Brownie Bash...." she says. Are you kidding? Seriously....how mentally incapable are you? We were able to get her to turn around and get us the correct dessert and I gotta say I wish we didnt. It was awful. A big hard brown turd of disgusting. What kills me is that the food is really good. The vegetarian pineapple chicken is delicious, the veg sesame chicken is also good. The veg beef though has an odd wintergreenish flavor to it. The orange chicken is also good...mistakes or not. Dessert = awful. The service is so bad that I really dont want to give it two stars but since the food is good ill let it slide. Maybe just order takeout if you come here? Its really disappointing because there are really very few places on Long Island that offer vegetarian menu's. Oh well.

I frequent this often, and I think the vegetarian menu is awesome. Just make sure you are clear when ordering anything "vegetarian" on the phone.

This place is the best. Fast service with matching great food. I'm not a fan of their beef dishes though. The sushi has been very good and taste fresh. I believe its freshness is only second to Sumuo. The Chinese dishes are good also. Not too greasy but I would be selective as to some of the dishes they offer.

I stopped in for the "huge vegetarian menu" and the "4-course lunch $7.99" advertised on the sign. I guess you have to specifically ask for these things? Not on the menu I got, so I assumed they were nonexistent... how was I supposed to know to ask about it?! That's ridiculous. They should just bring that menu to the table. It's not like it's a secret... it's on their sign! From the outside, I never would have imagined the inside would look that way. I thought I stepped into the twilight zone. Like many Chinese-Japanese restaurants, it seems to be heavier on the Chinese side. Mom ordered the homemade bean curd which was pretty tasty. I finally found the two-roll sushi lunch special hiding on the menu and had a California roll and a peanut avocado roll. Honey-roast peanuts and avocado... interesting combination but pretty good. But... the service was terrible. We had barely been seated when the waitress came to take our order, and looked put off when we asked for more time. I saw my lunch sitting on the sushi bar for about 5 minutes between the time Mom's food was delivered and the time the waitress actually went to get mine. We were one of maybe 3 tables in the place that was occupied. When we were ready for our check, I actually stood up to go find the waitress, since we'd been waiting a good 10 minutes after we were done. I would love to give their vegetarian menu a try, but I can't see myself putting up with the terrible service again.

I have been here many times both dine in and take-out. It's the best Chinese food I have found in the Medford area. There is a large vegetarian menu but you have to ask for it. I have special ordered in the past and they have been accommodating. I have found other Chinese places in the area over use "Chinese 5 spice". That is not the case here. It's a nice restaurant and if you sign up on their web site, they send you the occasional coupon.

    (4)
  • Kristy B.

Woman who answers the phone is very rude. I had been there before and this time I wanted it delivered and the woman on the phone was so rude I canceled my order and told them i will not be back. Their food is not good enough to be spoken to that way.

Easily some of the best sushi I've had outside of Manhattan. Service is good, sushi is great!

  • Leo B.

We are regulars here. Sushi is inventive and fresh. Soups are great! Service can be spotty and slow at time though we request our waitress that seems to be the best.

  • Jeff G.

Decent food - nothing too special. They seem to be open later than other places in this area, so it was the right spot to hit after just touching down at JFK and making the drive out to LI. Neighborhood seems a little sketchy, so I wouldn't hang out there too long. I went for the Chinese food but next time would probably go for Thai - what flexibility this place has, no?

    (3)
  • Kit K.

Their sushi is great. It can also sometimes be a hit or miss because the last time I went there it was just alright. The prices are reasonable especially their lunch specials. It's just strange that they have a large "We accept EBT" sign hanging outside. I didn't think that was allowed at restaurants but their food is still good lol

  • John W.

This place was a big disappointment. First of all the reviewers who say the staff is rude are correct, they are downright nasty. We usually travel about a half hour away from home to take out really good Chinese food, which is a pain. The Golden Star is close to home and it always has a big crowd there on the weekends...so we figured it must be pretty good...WRONG! I ordered a small hot and sour soup but got a large crab asparagus soup instead which was absolutely dreadful...it basically was a tub of salty water with a few pieces of slimy imitation crab meat and woody asparagus stems. That was 8 bucks literally down the drain, it was inedible. The spring rolls were bland, no flavor at all. The spare ribs were actually okay but I have to wonder how they get that neon color on them. The General Tso's Chicken was greasy blobs of dark meat and many of the blobs were actually just hunks of fried skin and fat. How this place draws a crowd I don't understand. It's not cheap and it's not good, no better than the god-awful strip mall Chinese joints around here. So it's back to our half hour trip next time we want good Chinese food.
